INTRODUCTION

CRYPTO is a windows-compatible computer program that encrypts and decrypts text. Each created unit of CRYPTO has a unique serial number, and the encrypted text can only be decrypted by a copy of CRYPTO with that serial number.

CRYPTO has been tested with Windows XP and Vista operating systems. The files occupy about 2 MB of storage. The CRYPTO window looks like this:

CRYPTO can be used to encrypt personal information before emailing it. The encryption can be inserted into the body of the email or attached as a WordPad file. If there were TABS in the plain text, it is recommended that the encryption be attached, because TABS may be changed in the email body, preventing an accurate decryption. All text in the CRYPTO window’s text boxes can be selected, typed, copied (CTRL+C), pasted (CTRL+V), cut (CTRL+X), and deleted (DELETE), using the keyboard and mouse in the usual ways.

The CRYPTO folder on the CD must be copied to a computer hard drive or another writable storage medium connected to the computer, such as flash memory. The CRYPTO folder contains two essential program files: Crypto.exe and Salflibc.dll, which must remain together. The user has no interaction with the Salflibc.dll file, but its presence is essential.

Your CRYPTO program is unique, being identified by its serial number which is printed on the CD label and displayed at the top left in the CRYPTO window. For you to communicate with others via CRYPTO, they must have copies of your CRYPTO program, which you are free to provide.

You initiate CRYPTO by double-clicking the Crypto.exe icon. The CRYPTO window will then appear in the middle of your screen.

Near the top center of the CRYPTO window is a text box where you may enter a code key, consisting of any characters on a typical keyboard, including spaces. The code key is case-sensitive, and the total number of characters plus spaces cannot exceed eight. If you are decrypting, you must enter the code key (if any) used in the encryption, or the plain text will appear as gibberish.

The use of a code key is optional. If no code key is entered, CRYPTO uses its internal code key, which is derived from its serial number. If a code key is entered, it is combined with the serial number to produce a more complex code key. No two copies of CRYPTO created by Trajectory Solution have the same serial number. Therefore, whether or not a code key is used, your encryption can only be decrypted by your own CRYPTO program or a copy of it.

The two large text boxes in the CRYPTO window are for entry (by typing or pasting) of either plain text (left box) or an encryption (right box). The text will automatically wrap horizontally, and a vertical scroll bar will activate if necessary. The text can include any character on a typical keyboard and can be divided into as many paragraphs as desired.

After the text is entered in the appropriate box, you encrypt (or decrypt) it by clicking the button above the box. If you are encrypting plain text, you click the encrypt button, and the encryption will appear immediately in the encryption box. If you are decrypting an encryption, you click the decrypt button, and the plain text will appear immediately in the plain-text box. When either button is clicked, any text in the destination box is cleared before being replaced.

If the plain text contains TABS, the encryption should be attached to an email instead of being inserted in the body of the email, because some email applications will alter the TAB and prevent an accurate decryption of the encrypted text.
